LAELA, NURUL.2010. Using 3-D Animation Movies to Improve the Speaking Ability of the Students at English Course from basic (EFB), Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Program, STAIN Tulungagung. Advisor: Ida Isnawati, S.Pd.
Key words: speaking skill, movie, 3-D (three-dimensional) movie.
In Indonesia, English has been taught since the fourth grade of elementary school. Even in some school in cities, English has been taught since kindergarten. Nevertheless, most Indonesian students still lack the ability to speak, and so do the students at English Course from Basic (EFB), Tulungagung.
In speaking classes, the teacher of EFB usually give a dialogue of a certain topic. Then the students are to practice and memorize the dialogue with their friends and finally present the dialogue in front of the class in turn. By using this technique,
The mastery vocabulary, for some students, increases, but the class is usually dominated only by some active students, while the other feel shy it they have to make mistakes in front of the class. For the active and smart students, it seems that this kind of task is easy and they can follow the class well, but the weakness is that they are just able to speak up the sentences in the given dialogues. It is difficult for them to produce their own sentences.
The problems of the research: (1). How is the process of teaching speaking using 3-D animation movie to improve speaking ability of the students at English Course from Basic (EFB), Tulungagung?. (2). How can 3-D animation movies improve the student’s involvement in speaking class at English Course from Basic (EFB), Tulungagung, particularly in expressing ideas based on the 3-D animation movies watched?.
The objectives of the researcher: (1). To describe the process of teaching speaking using 3-D Animation movies to improve speaking ability of the students at English Course from Basic (EFB), Tulungagung, (2). To describe how 3-D animation movies improve the students involvement in speaking class English Course from Basic (EFB), Tulungagung, particularly in expressing ideas based on the 3-D animation movies watched.
.The researcher conduct this research at EFB, Sembung, Tulungagung. The research design employed is collaborative CAR (Collaborative Classroom Action Research) which is adapted from Kemmis and Mc Taggart’s Model. There are two cycles in this research. Each research involved one meeting. The subject of this research are 12 students of the first graduate of Junior High School. To get the data, the researcher use two instruments, they are: observation and test. The data is presented in form of observation sheet involved the student’s speaking ability and the student’s involvement. The criteria of success of the student’s speaking ability will be achieved if 8 out of 12 students (66,66%) get the total score > 3. while the criteria of success of the student’s involvement will be achieved if most of students get score 3,1 - 4. later the total score is score x 10 (3.1 x 10=31 and 4 x 10 = 40).
From the result of the research, it is found that there is a significant progress both of the student’s speaking ability and the student’s involvement. In term of the student’s speaking ability, in the preliminary study, there are 2 out of 12 students (16,66%) get the total score > 3. Later, after the implementation of 3-D animation movies strategy, in cycle one, there are 3 out of 12 students (25%) get the total score > 3. In cycle two, there are 9 out of 12 students (75%) get the total score > 3. In term of the student’s involvement. In the preliminary study, almost off students get score 1, then the total score is 1 x 10 = 10. After the implementation of the 3-D animation movie strategy, in cycle one, almost of them get score 2, then the total score is 2 x 10 = 20. Later in cycle two, most of them get score 4, then the total score is 4 x10 =40
To conclude, the 3-D animation movie strategy is one of the appropriate strategies to solve the students’ problem in speaking because after the implementation of the 3-D animation movie strategy, the result is quite surprising. This strategy can stimulate the students to speak English well. The students who are usually active become more active and the students who are usually passive in speaking class become active and confident to express their ideas in English orally. It can happen because the strategy the researcher applies in interesting for them. The activities are fun and exciting.
Based on the result of this research, it is suggested that the teacher of English Course From basic apply this model as one of the alternative models to be used in teaching speaking and to introduce the 3-D animation movie strategy to formal English Teachers in order to improve the speaking ability of the students in formal schools. It is also advisable for the future researchers that they conduct similar research on speaking in other setting and in other learning institutions to figure out whether or not the strategy can be used in order to solve the student’s speaking ability problems.
