A comparative study on using English song and reading text toward students English vocabulary mastery to the fourth year class at SDN II Purworejo in academic year 2010/2011

Generally, the goal teaching a foreign language is that the students are expected to be able the master of four skills, such as listening, writing, speaking, and reading. to master language, the students have to know and understand the language elements, such as grammar, structure, vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling. To make students easy to express their ideas orally in teaching learning process, the researcher uses English song media and reading text media to increase students’ English vocabulary.
The problem of the study are: (1) how is the vocabulary achievement of the fourth year students of SDN II Purworejo Ngunut Tulungagung taught using English song?, 2) how is the vocabulary achievement of the four year students of SDN II Purworejo Ngunut Tulungagung taught using reading text?, and (3) which media do have better result on the vocabulary achievement of the fourth year students at SDN II Purworejo Ngunut Tulungagung?
The purpose of this research are: (1) to know the students’ score in English vocabulary mastery taught using English song?, (2) to know students’ score in English vocabulary mastery taught reading text and (3) to know which media has better results on the vocabulary achievement to improve the students English vocabulary.
The design of the research is the comparative study. The samples that the researcher uses are 23 students. To get sample the researcher uses purposive sample. To obtain data the researcher uses test. Whereas, to find out significant different score on students’ English vocabulary when they are taught by using English song and when they are taught by using reading text, the researcher uses t-test formula with SPSS 16.0.
The result if the data analysis shows that the students’ score taught by using English song is bigger that taught by using reading text. Based on SPSS 16.0 statistical analysis it shows that t-test > t-tables (4.930>1.833). It means that there is a significant influence between score of teaching by using English song sand reading text. It can be concluded that the students get good scores in achieving English vocabulary after teaching by using English song. English song has better result on the vocabulary achievement than reading text. The students English vocabulary improve significantly so, teaching English vocabulary using English song is effective to improve students’ English vocabulary. Therefore, it can be used as a reference media to teach English especially to increase student’s vocabulary mastery.
