Vocabulary is the most important one for those who want to be mastery every language. The reason was when we are going to speak, write, or learn another language we need lot of vocabularies. In fact in the field most of students’ were lazy in memorizing the new vocabularies. They also happened in “SMP Islam Durenan†especially the students for seventh grade.
The statement of the problem as follows†How is the implementation of inquiry technique in teaching vocabulary at Islamic junior high school?†and “How the vocabulary mastery of first grade of Islamic junior high school Durenan Trenggalek be improved by using inquiry technique?â€. The purpose of the study is how this technique could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery in the seventh grade of Islamic junior high school Trenggalek.
The design of the research was classroom action research based on the model Kemmis & Mc Taggart. The procedure were planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this study were 40 students of seventh class at Islamic junior high school Durenan, Trenggalek in academic year 2010/2011. They have low motivation and they have poor vocabularies from preliminary study. In this study, the researcher could achieve the criteria success in two cycle.
As the finding it was shown that there was improvement of the students’ vocabulary mastery from preliminary study to the last meeting. The result of preliminary study showed that the students’ average scores is 68,1 and there was only 6 students who get 75, while the result of Cycle I showed that the students’ average is 74,5 and there were 15 students who get the result 75 and the result of Cycle 2 showed that the students’ average is 79,08 and there were 31 students who get score 75 estimate 78 % students passed in post test. Beside that, the students’ motivations were increased based on their class involvement and questionnaire.
As the conclusion of this study, the students’ vocabulary mastery could be improved using inquiry technique. The improvement was caused by the students’ interest in the use of inquiry technique. Students’ felt more relaxed during English class and they also have good motivation in learning process.
Finally, in using inquiry technique, the researcher suggests to the English teacher to make sure that the students have understood well the material before learning used inquiry technique. The teacher should also control the students’ activities in the implementing technique and presents the materials in enjoyable, relaxed and understandable way.
