In teaching and learning process, English teachers have to able to encourage and motivate learners to study. As foreign language, English is considered as problem for almost of Indonesian learners. They think that English is difficult. As in one skill of language skill namely reading, from this, the researcher conducted descriptive study on teaching reading in the second grade of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Kalidawir.
The formulation of the research problems were: 1) what is the material development implemented in teaching reading of the second grade students at MTs Aswaja Tanggungri Kalidawir?, 2) what techniques of teaching reading are used in the second grade students at MTs Aswaja Tanggungri Kalidawir?, 3) what evaluation of teaching reading is used in the second grade students at MTs Aswaja Tanggungri Kalidawir?, and 4) how is the students’ response in learning reading of second grade at MTs Aswaja Tanggungri Kalidawir?
The purpose of this study were to: 1) to describe the material development implemented in teaching reading of the second grade students at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Kalidawir, 2) to describe the techniques of teaching reading are used in the second grade students at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Kalidawir, 3) to describe the evaluation of teaching reading is used in the second grade students at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Kalidawir , and 4) to describe the students’ response in learning reading of second grade at MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Kalidawir
Research Method: 1) the research design in this study was descriptive design with qualitative approach, 2) the subject of this study was all students of second year at MTs Aswaja Tungganri Kalidawir Tulungagung, 3) the research instrument was interview sheet, observation sheet, and questionnaire, and 4) the data analysis used descriptive analysis.
The result showed that related to the reading material the teacher used descriptive text. It is developed since it is as the material taught to the students during the research and the interesting side to develop like from the features of descriptive text namely picture and the content. The answer is that the English teacher in MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Kalidawir used lecturing technique and demonstration technique. Both are used based on the students’ characteristics daily in the class. The researcher found that the evaluation process was done in the end of the reading process which functioned to review the students’ reading skill and understanding mastery in comprehending the reading material. The last is about the students’ response toward the teaching reading in the class. Given a set of questionnaire, the students had various reasons why they like and vice versa toward the teaching, but, the teacher had already had other alternatives to stimulate the students’ motivation in the class by modifying the reading materials and teaching techniques.
