In Indonesia, English is as foreign language. It is taught from kindergarten until university level. Mastering English, the students have to know skills and component of language. One of them is grammar. In learning grammar the students are influenced by some factors such as motivation. Motivation is very important in learning English especially grammarbecause it can improve the understanding of grammar and also the grammar achievement. Motivation also can make them more diligent in learning English grammar.
The formulation of the research problem was: Is there any correlation between motivation and grammar achievement ofthe first year students at MTs N TUNGGANGRI?
The purpose of this study was: to know the correlationbetween motivation and grammar achievement of the first year students at MTs N TUNGGANGRI
The research design in this study was correlational research with quantitative approach. Here the researcher used stratified random sample technique. The population was all the first year students of MTsNTunggangri which consist of which consists of 280 students from 8 classes. The sample was 80 students that were chosen randomly 10 students from each class. The research instruments were questionnaire and grammar test. The data analysis was using Pearson’s Product Moment Coefficient Correlation Formula.
The result of the calculation using Pearson’s product moment the correlation between motivation and grammar achievement showed that the coefficient correlation was 0.375. It means the correlation is low. The coefficient correlation (r-count) was 0.375, whereas, r-table with significant level 5% was 0.220. So the r-count is higher than r-table.
Based on the result above, it showed that there is positive correlation between motivation and grammar achievement of the first year students at MTsNTunggangri although the correlation is low. Finally the researcher hopes that this research can givecontribution to the improvement in teaching learning English grammar.
