There are many kinds of method to teaching speaking that can be used. One of them is role play method. It was believed that the method could help the students to improve speaking ability. Role play can give stimulus to the students to speak more. In this case the writer tried to know how the effectiveness of using role play method in teaching speaking skill of the first grade students at MTs al Ma’arif Pon. Pes Panggung Tulungagung in the academic year 2011 / 2012. The formulations of the research problem were: 1) how is the student speaking ability before being taught using role play method in teaching speaking? 2) How is the student speaking ability after being taught using role play method in teaching speaking? 3) Do the students taught before using role play method have better result than after using role play method in teaching speaking?. The purposes of this study were to: 1) know the student’s speaking ability before being taught using role play method in teaching speaking. 2) Know the student’s speaking ability after being taught using role play method in teaching speaking. 3). know whether the use of role play method have better result than without use role play method to improve the student’s ability in speaking. Research method: 1) the research design in this study was experimental design with quantitative approach; 2) the population of this study was all students of first grade at MTs al Ma’arif Pon. Pes Panggung Tulungagung, 3) the sample was VII A class consisting of 35 students, 4) the research instrument was test, 5) the data analysis was using T test.
The result showed that the students’ Mean score in teaching speaking before they are taught using role play method is only 33,371. While the students’ score after they are taught using role play method was 42,345. The result of t_( count ) was 7,967, whereas the t-critic value (t- table) at 0, 05% level of significance is 2,021. So, 〖 t〗_count is bigger than〖 t〗_(table ). It’s mean that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states that there is significant effect of using role play method in teaching speaking skill to the VII A grades at MTs al Ma’arif Pon. Pes Panggung Tulungagung is accepted. Whereas, the null hypothesis (Ho) which states that there is no significant effect of using in using role play method in teaching speaking skill to the VII A grades at MTs al Ma’arif Pon. Pes Panggung Tulungagung is rejected. In other words, role play method can be used as an alternative to teach speaking to the students at Junior High School level.
