Vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write. Without an extensive vocabulary and strategies for acquiring new vocabulary, learner often achieve less than their potential and may be discouraged from making use of language learning opportunities around them such as listening to the radio, listening to the native speaker, using language in different context, reading, or watching television. According to interview and test there are some problems in teaching vocabulary. First, students’ participation of study was low and score of vocabulary test was fair. One media that may able to overcome some problem above is by using pictures. This media is really helpful for teacher to introduce the meaning, create a sense of real place and real event, make the meaning clear and memorize easily, and add fun, and soon.
The formulations of the research problem were; 1) How can the pictures media improve the fourth grade students vocabulary mastery at SDN Pandean academic year 2011/2012? 2) How can picture media increase participation of study for the fourth grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SDN Pandean in academic year 2011/2012?
The objectives of the study are to know how: 1) picture can improve vocabulary mastery of fourth grade students at SDN Pandean in academic year 2011/2012. 2) Picture can increase students’ participation of fourth grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SDN Pandean in academic year 2011/2012
Research method: 1) Research design in this study was classroom action research. 2) The subject and setting of this study was all students of fourth grade at SDN Pandean Trenggalek. 3) Criteria of success of the study were a. If 100% students score at the cycle shows ≥ 75. b. If all of student are active in vocabulary teaching learning process. 4) Instruments to collecting data were interview, test, and observation. 5)Technique of data analysis was used qualitative and quantitative.
The result showed that students’ score in vocabulary class while the students’ mean score in preliminary study was 75, 23, cycle I was 80,68 and in cycle 2 was 92,04. Another result is the students’ participation was good. All of the students ask to the teacher or other friend if there are difficult vocabularies, and all of them want to come forward to guess picture.
Based on the students’ score of test in cycle 1 and cycle 2, it can be concluded that the use of picture media were improve the fourth grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SDN Pandean, Kecamatan Durenan, Kabupaten Trenggalek in the academic year 2011/2012. The improvement can be seen from the students’ score of the result in cycle 1 and cycle 2. The students’ participation in teaching learning process was good. All of them ask to teacher or other friend if there were difficulties vocabulary, and all of them want to come forward to guess pictures.
The procedures of applying picture media, in this study were: first the teacher show the picture and give inform name of picture. Second the teacher ask student to make sentence and to hold a game. In playing a game the researcher make piece of paper and make picture, then researcher stick the picture in wall and student look for piece of paper that fill the name of picture.
