In Indonesia, English as a foreign language has been taught at Senior High School.In learning English, students should master the language skills;they are listening, speaking, writing, and reading. Especially for reading, itshould be mastered by students when they want to be succesfull in learning English. There are many technique in teaching reading. Speed reading technique is the one of the technique. Using by the method, the students get information of reading quickly and can mastering reading well.
Statements of the problemin this research are 1) “how is the students’ reading achievement in reading before being taught by using speed reading technique?†2) “how is the students’ reading achievement in reading after being taught by using speed reading technique?†3) “are there any significant differences of student’s achievement in reading between before and after being taught by using speed reading technique?â€.
The purposes of this research are 1) to know the students’ reading achievement before being taught using Speed reading technique. 2) to know the students’ reading achievement after being taught using Speed reading technique. 3) to know the significant difference in students’ reading achievement before and after being taught using Speed reading technique.
Research design of this research was experimental design using quantitative. This study used pre-experimental design. In this study the experimental design used is One-Group Pretest-Posttest. The population was all the students of ten B class at MA Unggulan Bandung which consist of 34 students. Because the number of students was not large, the researcher took all of tenB class as sample. The instruments that used in this research was administering test (pre–test and post–test). Data analysis of this research is using T-test.
Finally, it can be concluded that Speed reading method is effective method to teach reading to ten grade students of MA Unggulan Bandung. It can be proved by the result of this research is the score of reading before taught by using the speed reading technique was enough because the mean of the total score of 34 students is (72.21). After getting treatment, the mean score of reading is (83.08). It was improved, with the t-test analysis that use by researcher, the result of t count is (8.3). By comparing the “t†that she has got in calculation t count = (8.3) and the value of “t†on the t score table t0.05 = (2.042). It is known that tcount is bigger than ttable = 8.3>2.042. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that states there is significant difference of students’ reading achievement by using speed reading technique is acccepted, while the null hypothesis (Ho) that states there is no significant difference of students’ reading achievement by using speed reading technique is rejected.
