Kumon is a new method on teaching. It was found by Toru Kumon, as mathematic teacher of senior high school. Other than mathematics, is currently in
Indonesia, children have to follow course Kumon English in classes organized it.
Kumon is one of teaching method which emphasize on individual learning, confidence, sense of achievement. English Kumon Program EE was design for student who their mother tongue is English, and English Kumon Program
EFL (English as Foreign Language), was design for student who their mother tongue is not English.
The Formulations of the study are: 1) What are the procedures of applying Kumon Method in English Instruction? 2) What is the role of teacher in applying Kumon Method in English instruction? 3) What is the role of students in applying Kumon Method in English Instruction? 4) What are the media usual in applying Kumon Methdod in English Instruction? 5) What are the strength and the weakness of Kumon Method in English Instruction?
The purposes of the study are: 1) To know the procedure of applying Kumon Method in English Instruction. 2) To know the role of teacher in applying Kumon Method in English Instruction. 3) To know the role of students in applying Kumon Method in English Instruction. 4) To know the media usual in applying Kumon Method in English Instruction. 5) To know the strength and the weakness of Kumon Method in English Instruction.
The research design used in this study is descriptive research with qualitative approach. Data collecting method: understanding Kumon Method, selecting data and comparing between Kumon Method and another methods of teaching, dividing the method that have similar role in teaching. Data analysis, in this study the writer employs qualitative technique to analyze data; the qualitative data are analyzed by inductive method.
This thesis particularly discussed the characteristics of Kumon Method that emphasized on self-learning technique, it make Kumon different with another methods. The procedures of Kumon Method are: students come to the Kumon class, they submit their home work before enter to the class, do the worksheet at that time, practice to say what they were listen from the CD, receive home work before leave the Kumon class. The role of teacher in applying Kumon Method in English instruction, are: monitors student activity, correct the student pronunciation. The role of student in applying Kumon Method in English instruction, are: take a home work before enter to the class, do the worksheet, practice to say the word from the CD. The media usual in applying Kumon Method in English instruction are: the worksheet, CD and CD textbook, and o’clock. The straight of Kumon Method are: starting at an appropriate level, progress at own face, advance beyond school grade level, fostering confidence. And the weaknesses of kumon method are: Kumon waste of time money, student is forced to finish worksheet, if student a weak in some skill and make mistake Kumon does not have extra worksheet.
The result of the study show that kumon method has similar role or technique with some of methods teaching, they are: (1) direct method, here the student is given real object or picture to show the meaning of some word, (2) audio lingual method, here the teacher is tutoring student one by one, (3) community language learning, here the student listen their material from CD and tape-recording. The description of kumon method is individual learning programs tailored to each individual child potential which does not compare student with one another.
