This study was designed to improve students’ ability in vocabulary in English class through implementing flash card. The objective of the research was to find out how the flash card can be employed to improve students’ vocabulary.
This research was a classroom action research. It adopted Kemmis and Mc Taggart’s model. This research consisted of two cycles; each consisted of four stages, namely: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this research were the seventh year of MTsN Pucanglaban. In this research the researcher acted as the English teacher, while the English teacher became a collaborator acted as an observer during the implementation of flash card. The instruments used to collect the data in this research were an observation sheet, field notes, interview, students’ questionnaire and test.
The result of this study showed that the flash card was able to improve students’ vocabulary. The procedures to be followed were (1) giving explanation of the definition of flashcard and the vocabulary concept (2) asking the students to report the words after her in unison, as the teacher listen (3) asking the students to show it (4) asking the students to make simple sentences according to words found.
The finding of the research indicated that the flash card could improve the students’ vocabulary. The improvement can be seen from the increase of the students’ assessment from preliminary test, cycle one and cycle two. In preliminary study that just 12 students (40%) passed the preliminary test, while 18 students (60%) students were unsuccessful. There was just one student who got excellent grade. In the first cycle four students or 14% got less than 65, 13 students or 44% got only passing grade that is 65, five students or 16% got 70, six students or 20% got 75, two students or 6% got 80. And in the second cycle there was significant improvement. There were just 2 students who got 60 and 4 students who got 65. It meant that just 6% students failed and 14% students got only the passing grade. Others 24 or 80% students were successful with higher score than passing grade.
It was suggested that the English teachers employ the flash card to improve students’ vocabulary. However, to get the passing score of the test in this research should be planned carefully. Finally, other researchers, one suggested employing flash card would bring the students to the freedom of expressing their feeling in vocabulary. It built their self confident automatically.
